July 2008

I have been on a trip to Bangalore since last three days. We had a google summer of coders meetup at Google R & D, Bangalore. Anyway it was a splendid experience. Awesome ! Nothing more to describe.

The meet was scheduled for 24th of July 11 am - 3 pm. I reached google R & D little bit late around 15 mins. It was not my mistake, the Bangalore traffic jams are fun than (more…)

Last week I subscribed for BSNL EVDO (Evolution-Data_Optimized) Internet connection.

evdo
I have received an EVDO USB Device which looks to be pocket flash drive. There are two types of EVDO based connection provided by BSNL, 2.4 Mbps and 144kbps. I went for 144kbps. Both plans are offered with unlimited bandwidth.
It is cheaper compared to other internet providers. EVDO seems to be brainchild of 3G mobile networking. For 144kbps, it operates in CDMA mode.

I went through the device package box and realised that there is only manual and device driver provided for M$ Windows. What a crap !

In a while, I pinged google for more info. Found lots of docs on configuring the device. Mostly, duplicated data of one or two sources.
The device kernel modules will not be loaded by default. So I ran off a manual configure with PPP (Point to Point Protocol) using wvdial and Voila !

You may load the driver manually by:

# /sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x6000 ;

and respective connection model device will be /dev/ttyUSB0

I felt like its a kinda frustration to configure it manually by GNU/Linux users and I’m afraid of users going back to M$ Windows and use that default application. This leveraged me to write a device installer script.

Download this script [DOWNLOAD] and go for a one command install.

Usage:
As root run,
# sh bsnl_evdo.sh

Finally it works fine.
I am getting a download speed around 9 - 15 kbps. But, truly speaking the connection speed flows between bytes and kilobytes Anyway I didn’t get enough time to play around with it to optimise speeds.

gnome slynux [at] svn.gnome.org

We’ll I received a gnome svn developer account. Now I can commit changes to PiTiVi branch :)

Now I have the working copy at http://svn.gnome.org/svn/pitivi/branches/SOC_2008_SLAKSHMAN

After several research on different brands of digital cameras, I finally ended up by choosing Canon SX 100 IS.

camera

Features:

  • 10x optical zoom lens with optical Image Stabilizer
  • 8.0 Megapixels
  • DIGIC III image processor
  • Face Detection Technology enhanced with new Face Select and Track function and dedicated Face Selector button

  • Improved Red-Eye Correction in playback
