Today, It was one of the funniest days at my college. The annual techfest of Model Engineering College, ExcelMec 2k8 is going well at college on these days Jan 31 - Feb 2. There are enough number of innovative events and contests. Events ranges from various tech contests to Robo show and lot more.

I just tried my luck with Linux Guru contest. There were altogether three rounds. First round was elimination round. We were given 30 multiple choice based on GNU/Linux filesystem, general commands, and configuration files. It was quite easier than I expected. The Second and Third rounds were pure shell scripting challenges. Second round was provided with 10 questions for which answers should be in one line command. We cannot use loops, semicolon terminators etc. it can consist of pipes, redirects etc. The third round included five questions which were a little bit large.

It was a competition I tried out without any preparations…and after long six months gap on writing shell scripts.

Finally the results got published. I arrived at Second position. :D

By evening, I got a laptop installed with Debian from Vineeth Mohan, one of seniors at college. I’m now blogging and eating some bandwidth on College Wifi at Hostel Room No: 102.

Hi all,
I’m got paired with my new girlfriend since today. She is no one else than my laptop Dell Inspiron 1420 :).

I have been waiting without patience last few days after ordering for my lappy. Some Dell official ringed me last Saturday announcing I would get my laptop on last tuesday. My face lit up. Finally the curious Tuesday came up. But no news on laptop. I called the dell official being in restless and fired..wtf !! I checked out http://dell.co.in/orderstatus. Oh damn it showed Jan 16 as delivery date.

Unexpectedly I got the call from Parcel office this friday :) Woah. It has arrived. I was on the way back to home from college by train. I reached home by 11.00 pm. Ran off towards the Package box. Unpacked it in a couple of seconds.

notebook

It was pre-installed with Microsoft Windows Vista Home basic. What a crap ?? It was the first time I got the Vista for the heck. I would say. Even M$ Windows XP was far better than Vista Home basic. In a couple of minutes I made the idiot M$ Win Vista get out of my lappy. Made it loaded with Ubuntu 7.10. She looked awesome with compiz-fusion effects.

Its powered with :

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T7250
2GB (2 X 1024MB) 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
Intel(R) Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
160GB SATA Hard Drive
Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Combination Drive with dual layer write capabilities
9-cell 85Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Quote: Waiting for the freshers day to arrive at college.

UPDATE: I first installed my lappy with Ubuntu 7.10 gusty gibbon. I came across two issues. Integrated Mic and Integrated Webcam weren’t detected by ubuntu. After some googling, I resolved the issue as follows.
see http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Dell_Inspiron_1520#Webcam

Inorder to fix Dell Inspiron 1420 Microphone issue, do

# apt-get update
# apt-get install linux-backports-modules
# reboot

Then configure sound mixer and set input source as Front Mic.
You may use alsamixer for configuring.

Today I attended the speech of great Richard M Stallman. :)
I had planned from last week itself to attend RMS talk at this turn.

I setout from MEC hostel by morning around 8.30am, and reached college. One of my classmate, Naveen joined me to go for attending the talk held at Union Christian College, Aluva which is around an hour journey from the college. We were on the peak of enthisiasm to meet RMS.

RMS

When I reached UC college, I joined with some of the geeks found around there. Shyam, Anivar, Mobin were there. Stallman arrived with C00l ! . RMS was received by students of UC college by singing Free Software song. He spoke on “Free software in ethics and Practices“. He was simply amazing. RMS was going on with his job whenever he get some interval, with his IBM Thinkpad. He never missed a single opportunity to speak about the evils of Micro$oft. :D
